Computers can be custom built for just about any need. And depending on what you’re using it for and what your budget is, there are certain features you’ll want.
If you’re simply using it for online research and communication as well as homework assignments that include papers and presentations, a laptop might be your best option for it’s size and portability. But if you don’t plan on transporting it to your dorm and bringing it home with you for weekend visits or when the school year lets out, you can save some money by investing in a good desktop computer. Either way, you’ll want at least 1 GB of memory, a DVD burner, Microsoft Windows Vista or Mac OS X for basic software, wired and wireless networking capabilities for connecting in either your home or a dorm.
Graphics majors, you’ll want to increase your memory to at least 2 GB, get a larger screen for better viewing, opt for the largest and fastest hard drive available with a dual-layer DVD burner and an advanced graphics card with 256MB or 512MB of its own memory. You’ll also want to consider multimedia connectors such as S-Video, FireWire and S/PDIF.
Set a budget before you head to the store. Then, read reviews of different brands and components before you buy. And remember, Geek Squad can service your computer no matter where you purchase it. Happy shopping!
