Useful info, but I really wanted your opinion on whether or not to leave my laptop plugged in after the battery has reached a full charge. I've heard that I should always unplug and let the battery run down all the way until it prompts me to plug in again. Is this correct?

The lithium-ion batteries that are standard in most new laptops do not suffer the "memory effect" of older portable batteries. It is safe to start charging the battery at any time, so you do not need to wait until the battery is completely dead to plug it in. However, you also do not want to keep the laptop plugged in continuously. A mix of charging and running off the battery works best for daily use. At least once a month, you'll want to "calibrate" your charging system by allowing the battery to run down, and then fully charging the battery. This also helps to keep the charging system measurements of how much charge you have left accurate.
