OBJECTIVE

To make sure your Windows XP machine has the latest in critical updates to help protect it against malware.

Introduction

Keeping your operating system updated is vitally important to the health of your computer. Windows Updates apply fixes to your Operating System that may be needed for improved functionality and stability of your PC, but more importantly, it also applies “Security Updates” that help plug holes in your Operating System that may allow malware to infect your PC (yes, even with updated anti-malware software running).

Understand now why Windows Updates are important? So, how do you make sure your Windows PC is updated properly, and on a regular basis? Read on.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

1. An internet connection.
2. A PC running Windows XP

PROCEDURE

1. Run Internet Explorer and click on it to open the program.
2. You can either click on Tools and select "Windows Update" from the pull down menu, or type in windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
3. Once the website loads you may be asked to install an Active X control. After this you should come to a screen with two options, “Express” and “Custom”.
   
   Custom: This option allows you to choose which updates you would like to run, including updates for sound, video, and other hardware components.
   
   Express: This, in most situations, will be the best option for you.  It only installs security updates needed to protect your computer.
   
    
4. Think you just need critical updates?  Go ahead and click on “Express”
5. In some cases you will be prompted to click on “Agree” or “OK” in order to install the updates. Go ahead and do so, and the updates will be downloaded and installed automatically.
6. After the updates are installed you may also be asked to reboot the computer upon completion. Go ahead and reboot.
7. Some updates will not be available until a previous one is installed. Always go back and double check that there are no more updates to install.
