OBJECTIVE

To make sure your Windows Vista/7 machine has the latest in critical updates to help protect it against malware.

Keeping your operating system updated is vitally important to the health of your computer. Windows Updates apply fixes to your Operating System that may be needed for improved functionality and stability of your PC, but more importantly, it also applies “Security Updates” that help plug holes in your Operating System that may allow malware to infect your PC (yes, even with updated anti-malware software running).

Understand now why Windows Updates are important? So, how do you make sure your Windows PC is updated properly, and on a regular basis? Read on.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

1. An internet connection.
2. A PC running Windows 7 or Vista

PROCEDURE

1. Click on the “Start” button (the round button with the Windows flag on it)
2. Click on “All Programs”
3. Scroll through the menu listing for "Windows Updates" (Note: It will not be in a folder but a single icon up towards the top of the listings.) 
4. Click on Windows Updates and allow the program to load.  As with XP, you have two different listings of updates.
   
   Important Updates: These will contain all the critical updates and security updates for your PC.  This is usually your best option.
   
   Optional Updates: Will contain non-critical updates such as hardware driver updates, video, and sound.
   
    
5. Go ahead and click on “Important Updates” and make sure that all are checked.
6. Click on "OK"
7. Next click on "Install Updates"
8. You may need to click on “Agree” or “OK” if prompted to for the updates to download and install.
9. As with XP, once the updates are done installing you may be asked to reboot the PC. Save your work and allow the PC to reboot.
10. Some updates will not be available until a previous one is installed. Always go back and double check that there are no more updates to install.
