Skype Setup
2 Minute Miracles

Did you know that you can talk (and see) friends and family live through your computer? With Skype, you can instant message, call other Skype users for free, and even video chat with them. Easy to set up and use, Skype is a revolution in the art of maintaining close connections with friends and family far away. In this tutorial, we will detail how to set up called Skype on your PC and send (and receive) text, voice, and video calls.

  1. A high speed internet connection
  2. A computer (desktop, netbook, etc.)
  3. A webcam (Optional:  Only needed if you wish to make video calls)
  4. A microphone (if your PC or webcame doesn't already have one)

The first thing to do is go to and click on “Join Skype”.

  1. Fill out the user information to create your user account, creating a username and password.
  2. Download and install the appropriate software for your computer.
Don't worry; there are versions for both Mac and Windows.
In some cases, you may be prompted to restart your PC to complete the install.
  3. Run Skype for the first time.
  4. You will be prompted to enter in the username and password to use Skype.
  5. The first time, you will be prompted to test the audio, video and calling capability of the Skype software by making a test call.

Now you have the software installed and tested. Next, you need to add contacts in order to connect with your family and friends. To add contacts, do the following:

  1. Click “Add Contact”
  2. Enter in your desired contacts information (usually their email address or existing Skype name)
  3. Click “Add Contact”

By following this process, the person you are trying to add will be notified that you are trying to add them to your contacts. Once they have approved the invite to your list, you will be able to chat, call, and video call them for free (if they have a Skype account), or for a small fee (if calling to a land line or cellphone).

Now that you’ve added a contact, you are ready to make a call. To do so, do the following:

  1. In the “Contacts” column, left click on the contact’s name.
  2. In the right column, the contact’s information will pop up – including the following options:
    1. “Call” (to make an audio call)
    2. “Video Call” (for web cam or face to face call)
    3. A box at the bottom where you can simply type them a message.

NOTE: You can also call regular telephone numbers from Skype by clicking on “Call phones” and typing in the number or selecting a contacts phone number to call when you click on them.
